OGONI YOUTHS REJECT PURPORTED TRANSFER OF OGONI CLEAN-UP TO MINISTRY OF NIGER DELTA AFFAIRS

Commends Federal Ministry of Environment For Setting The Records Straight

The Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF), umbrella body of Ogoni Youths has rejected the purported transfer of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP),  the agency saddled with the Ogoni Clean-up from the Federal Ministry of Environment to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and commended the Federal Ministry of Environment for setting the records straight.

Recall that the Minister of Transportaction, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo had on Thursday 28th July, 2022 during management retreat of the  Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Abuja, was quoted to have said that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to take over the supervision of HYPREP from the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Although, the above news has been refuted by the Federal Ministry of Environment, which is the Ministry gazetted by law and saddled with the responsibility to supervise and oversee HYPREP/Ogoni cleanup project, via a statement issued on Friday 29th July, 2022 by the Director of Press, Saghir El Mohammed.

However, it is imperative to warn that Ogoni youths will vehemently resist any attempt to move HYPREP from the Ministry of Environment that has experienced environmental professionals who are knowledgeable in environmental issues to Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs which does not have a single environmentalist and is completely oblivious on issues concerning, pertaining and relating to the environment.

HYPREP was moved from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to the Federal Ministry of Environment by President Muhammadu Buhari because of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) findings and high level of environmental professional and the meddling of the Oil industry, who were part of the Ogoni issues.

We state it without equivocation that the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs (MNDA) was not able to construct a mere 15-kilometer, East-West Road Section III, Eleme Junction-Onne, which connects Ogoniland and major national oil and gas assets, nor sorted the plethora of issues surrounding the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in the past 3 years, cannot handle the highly scientific and internationalised Ogoni Clean-up Project.

THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE TO OGONI YOUTHS!

Whilst commending President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR for his unparalleled commitment to the success of the Ogoni cleanup project and and the Honourable Minister for Environment, Abdullahi Mohammed for his resolve to overhaul the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) to meet up timelines set for delivery of the Ogoni cleanup project, We call on all sons and daughters of Ogoni to rally round and support the Minister and his team to deliver the Ogoni cleanup project in record time.

Comrade Legborsi Yamaabana
President General, OYF
