As part of activities to mark the 2022 edition of the World Water Day, a foremost youth leader in Rivers State, Comrade Legborsi Yaamabana, has commissioned a newly constructed water project under the safe water initiative scheme to serve the people of Nyobe Bangha in Khana LGA of Rivers State.

Speaking during the formal hand-over of the project to the community, recently, Yaamabana, who is the President General of the Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF), said he embarked on the project to alleviate the plight of the people who have no access to good drinking water, due to the collapse of existing water facility in the community.

The OYF president who double as the chairman of the Rivers State Ethnic Youth Leaders Coalition noted that access to good drinking water was a major problem in Ogoni which has made the people prone to water-borne diseases, and called on the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, (HYPREP) to provide potable water in Ogoni communities as recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme, (UNEP). He also called on corporate organisations, politicians and public-spirited individuals to come to the aid of the people by embarking on projects that would better their lots.

In his remark, the Mene Bua Bangha, Mene Suanu Baridam, who was represented by Chief Kpugi Baridam, at the event, commended the youth leader for the gesture and urged the people to make judicious use of the facility.

Some of the women of the community who spoke with The Tide shortly after the commissioning of the project, expressed gratitude to the youth leader for embarking on such project. The women explained that they previously trekked over 6 km to search for drinking water in contaminated streams but the intervention has given them a great relief as they can now have access to good drinking water.
